Educational Background and
Fluxus Influences

Ulli Bomans was born in Kandel (Pfalz) in 1973. From 1993 to 1995, he completed training in drawing and painting at the Villa Wieser art school in Herxheim. He then studied fine art at the Kassel Art Academy under Fluxus artist Alison Knowles and Dorothee von Windheim. During these years, Bomans was involved in various performances by Alison Knowles and appeared with her in Bremen, Paris, and New York, among other places. In 1996, he also took part in a performance by Viennese actionist Hermann Nitsch in Naples.

Electronic music and
multimedia performance

In 1995, Bomans founded the music project Shrubbn!! with Marco Haas, which is primarily dedicated to experimental electronic music. Over the years, several vinyl albums have been released, accompanied by international performances. He launched his solo project Schieres in 1990 and, in 2002, teamed up with Björn Gailus to start Gladbeck City Bombing, a multimedia music and performance project that combines stage design, costumes, video projections, and electronic music. A queer component in Bomans‘ work began to become more visible with this project.

Sound installations and
compositions for the stage

In 1999 and 2000, Bomans organized performance evenings at Squat-Color in Marseille and appeared with various sound installations and performances at venues including the Toulouse School of Fine Arts and the Performance Congress at Bröllin Castle. Later, he immersed himself in theater production and in 2009 created the sound and music for the plays Alice im Schlunderschland and Corpus Delicti, which were performed at the Deutsche Oper and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg.

Urban assemblages and
international residencies

In 2011, Bomans began a series of residencies in several cities, including Belgrade, Los Angeles, and Mexico City, to develop the assemblage series Snippets using found objects collected in public space. His journey continued with artist residencies in Detroit, where he created the video works Road Work Ahead and Zwischen–stop, as well as the collage series Shame. In 2016, he began collaborating with the artist collective Studio +|-0, which led to further exhibitions and projects.

Room-filling collages and
serial portrait studies

In the second half of the 2010s, Bomans enlarged his collages to wall-filling formats and covered entire wall surfaces in various exhibitions. From 2020 to 2022, he devoted himself to the series Face It, Facer, and Agents, in which he incorporated portraits of people from his circle of friends as well as likenesses of autocrats. Since 2020, he has also been active as part of the artist duo Elke Glamourton together with Tobias Kegler, developing mail art with his dialogue partner, which is created analogously by sending works back and forth by post.

Teaching assignment and return
to figurative painting

In 2021, Bomans began working as an instructor of watercolor and acrylic painting at the Villa Wieser Art School in Herxheim. Since then, he has also been showcasing his figurative paintings to the public, exhibiting various series in watercolor, acrylic, and oil in his native Palatinate region, as well as in Stuttgart, Paris, and Bremen. This development has also garnered institutional recognition: in 2024, he was awarded third prize in the Werner Brand Art Foundation’s art competition in Hochstadt, followed in 2026 by first prize in the art competition of the Cultural Foundation of Sparkasse Karlsruhe.
